Away From The Numbers
A Summary
Logline: Imagine arriving home after school to find the FBI and other law enforcement agencies interviewing your mother because her ex-husband, your father, had been arrested for a jewelry heist from the estate of an international celebrity's wife in Palm Springs ... and that it was not the most traumatic event of your elementary school years.
"Away From The Numbers" is a portrait that should touch the lives of the millions who have found solace, even survival, in their educational, recreational and social support networks - in this case, the Buckley school and its sports programs. That dichotomy is a common experience we all share on at least a small level, but this young man's story is a balm for the more damaged among us as well by offering a highly relate-able tale and proper acknowledgment of vital support that is not often heralded otherwise. The Buckley school was an island of refuge and shares the primary character role with Aaron as he struggles to find balance in his day-to-day life. His absent father is arrested for stealing, his mom's best friend and another woman abuse him, and he retreats into sports as his once grand family life disappears from view. This is a tale of triumph and an honest glimpse of the life outside the refuge that was Aaron's own personal hell, but is it also a testament to support networks of every kind and how a boy found his way through, in and around the adult world not of his making.
